Hurricane Laura will further intensify over the Gulf of Mexico and is predicted to become a Category 3 “major” hurricane before making landfall along the southwest Louisiana or upper Texas coasts Wednesday night or early Thursday morning. It’s expected that hurricane winds up to 115 mph will bring life-threatening storm surge along the coast, and flooding rains and strong winds will extend well inland. Both Louisiana and Mississippi declared state of emergencies.
Marco made landfall Monday evening near the mouth of the Mississippi River with maximum winds of 40 mph. It has since been downgraded to a tropical depression and no longer poses much threat to southeast Louisiana. It continues to weaken as it moves westward. Locally up to five inches of rainfall could soak some areas from the north-central Gulf Coast into the Southeast.
The wildfires that continue to burn across California have led to the destruction of hundreds of thousands of acres, the evacuation of tens of thousands and the tragic deaths of at least five. Statewide there have been more than 360 recent fires — most sparked by lightning and several fueled by high temperatures, inaccessible terrain and limited resources. The 22 major fires that still blaze have scorched 660,000 acres and damaged or destroyed more than 660 structures.
