Northern California and the Pacific Northwest were hit Sunday with a convergence of storms that brought more than half a foot of rain to parts of the San Francisco Bay Area, along with high winds, flash floods, mudslides and the potential for heavy snow in the Sierra Nevada.

The extreme weather left hundreds of thousands of Californians without power, along with thousands in Washington and Oregon.

Flooding across the Bay Area closed streets in Berkeley and inundated the Bay Bridge toll plaza in Oakland. By Sunday morning, Mount Tamalpais, just north of San Francisco, had recorded a half-foot of rainfall during the previous 12 hours. Plus, many roads were under two feet of water in San Rafael. California Highway Patrol also closed down State Route 70 in Butte County due to mudslides and debris flows.

Parts of Washington experienced strong wind gusts — including Everett, about 25 miles north of Seattle, where gusts of up to 61 mph were recorded, according to the National Weather Service in Seattle.
