The Hong Kong Observatory issued a No 8 warning signal at 5:20 p.m. local time on Tuesday as Tropical Cyclone Kompasu, the second major storm to hit the city in four days, gathered strength.
Recent forecasts call for Kompasu to be closest to Hong Kong early Wednesday morning. Due to strong winds, several ferry routes and flights were canceled. Schools were also closed and shops near the ocean have stacked sandbags along entrances to protect against floods. Kompasu made landfall Monday evening in the Philippines, bringing heavy rains, floods and landslides.
