Hurricane Fiona hit Puerto Rico’s southwest coast on Sunday, unleashing landslides, ripping up asphalt from roads, and creating an island-wide crisis as the territory’s electrical system went completely out of service. According to local officials, full power restoration could take days due to the magnitude of the blackout.
Additionally, the storm caused destructive flooding as 12-to-24 inches of rain fell and continued into Monday — washing away cars and a bridge, downing power lines and trees, blocking roads, and flooding homes. Some areas have confirmed reports of over 24 inches of rain. An early estimate claims that Fiona could have a $10 billion impact on Puerto Rico’s economy.
After moving through Puerto Rico, Fiona strengthened to a Category 3 storm overnight, the first major Atlantic hurricane of 2022, with sustained winds of 115 mph. Hurricane conditions moved to the Turks and Caicos Islands today, and tropical storm conditions should spread over portions of the southeastern Bahamas through the day. Fiona is not expected to threaten the U.S. mainland.
