Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction of six more weeks of winter comes as an ice storm called Winter Storm Mara continues to hit the South with multiple rounds of snow, sleet and freezing rain.

Its path stretches from Texas to the Mississippi and Ohio valleys and Central Appalachians.

Since it hit Monday, Winter Storm Mara has caused power outages for over 400,000 homes in Texas and thousands more in lower Arkansas and Tennessee. Officials have warned motorists to stay off roads due to icy conditions. Snow, sleet and freezing rain are expected to continue through Groundhog Day for Texas, and through the weekend for Arkansas, Tennessee and Mississippi.

Other areas of the U.S. are bracing for more wintry conditions as an Arctic cold front continues to move in. It first hit Utah on Monday with temperatures as low as minus 62. The front is expected to bring snow and wind chills lower than minus 50 to New England by Friday and Saturday.
