Helping insurers and their customers reduce the environmental impact of property claims while controlling costs.
What we do
The insurance industry has set ambitious goals for achieving net-zero carbon emissions, but many organisations don’t know what they need to do to get there. Sedgwick is here to help. We aid insurers and adjusters in finding the most cost-effective ways to reduce the environmental impact of claims and support customers with speedy recoveries following loss events. Having managed millions of pounds of property claims, our talented team possess a wealth of expertise in damage assessment, quality repair options and minimising waste.
Our dedicated team of experts support insurers in pursuing their sustainability goals.
Commitment to sustainability
Driven by the company’s global environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategy, our UK operations have worked hard to achieve carbon-neutral status — putting us on track to meet our commitment to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) of becoming carbon net-zero by 2030. We’ve also earned ISO 14001 certification for our environmental management system and clear strategies for driving down the carbon footprint of our business.
Our solutions
As a next step in our ESG journey, our experts are now available to help insurance companies reach their scope 3 emissions targets by providing a hierarchy of sustainability solutions, including:
Sustainable damage management
We assist insurers and their policyholders in evaluating all options on the journey to recovery from a loss event, with a focus on achieving the best possible outcome for all parties and for the environment. Our skilled team take an impartial, scientific and swift approach to establishing the cause, extent and severity of damage and its impact on the affected business or high-net-worth property. Drawing on our expertise in damage management — including in-depth knowledge of specialist restoration techniques, energy efficient drying systems, resilient and sustainable building repairs, and reuse and repurposing of waste streams — Sedgwick offers sustainability solutions that can be embedded in recovery plans from the outset.
Disaster recovery project management
We provide a fast track disaster recovery project management service with sustainability at its heart. Our experts expand on the outline recovery plans of sustainable damage management consultants, working with all stakeholders to develop comprehensive and detailed project management plans. We focus on key deliverables, high-level requirements and evaluating risks. Sustainability options are embedded in our project plans and the carbon footprint is calculated wherever feasible. From there, we establish a multidisciplinary project team and use the latest in 3D digital imaging technology for remote team collaboration — thereby further reducing our carbon footprint. Our oversight ensures all teams are coordinated, fulfilling the scope of works on time and on budget, and meeting our exacting standards for quality. Using our knowledge, skills and experience, we’re able to prevent costly and time-consuming issues along the way, as well as build the level of confidence that enables stakeholders to make fast, effective decisions that drive projects forward.
Carbon reduction surveying
Our specialist sustainability consultants support adjusters in identifying and delivering upon the most environmentally friendly approach to claims handling, whilst managing costs. Our team assess carbon reduction opportunities for adjusters at the start of the claim process and offer impartial expert advice. Strategic approaches can include risk and energy reduction, loss mitigation, reuse of materials and repurposing/low-carbon repairs. Together with the assigned adjusters and sustainable damage management consultants, we consider the environmental impact of various mitigation and restoration strategies — working to reduce the claim’s carbon footprint and the future carbon impact of the business’s operations. Our mitigation strategies regarding the restoration and recovery of materials and equipment not only benefit planet Earth and create social value for insurers and their customers, but also reduce claims costs.
Carbon value calculator
We demonstrate financial and carbon savings using our carbon value calculator, which quantifies the environmental impact of each property claim and its related repairs by applying CO2 values to materials, labour and plant. The tool also measures and reports the impact across a client’s portfolio of repairs. By providing a baseline for current emissions and instantly calculating the potential impact of greener materials and processes, we empower clients to make informed decisions about their claims handling philosophies and evaluate practical changes to their suppliers and standards. Our carbon value calculator provides the financial and environmental context needed to help clients develop low-carbon policies and appreciate the potential impact of greener alternatives.
Our resources
We have a wealth of resources complementing our sustainable damage management solutions for the insurance industry, including:
Contractor network
Sedgwick is uniquely positioned to deliver on damage repairs, thanks to our managed network of specialist insurance contractors covering the whole of the UK. Together, our repair solutions and sustainability consultancy teams aim to identify opportunities for using alternative, low-carbon materials and reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills. The MI for repairs completed through our network show both the financial and carbon costs of individual projects and a portfolio of repairs, along with options for offsetting the carbon impact.
Flood resilience
Sedgwick’s specialists are well versed in the growing risk of flooding in the UK and can help clients understand their flood risk, the potential impact of a flood on their business and customers, and the current resilience level of their properties. We can offer recommendations on the most appropriate recoverable and resistant measures for you, as well as create a customised flood plan. We also support government grant applications by designing resilience measures, including cost breakdowns.
‘Build Back Better’
The Build Back Better programme offers homeowners the chance to install flood resilience measures (up to a £10,000 value) when making repairs following a flood; this ensures they are better prepared the next time their area floods. Our team is quite experienced in helping families secure Build Back Better funding and managing the installation of resilience measures in their homes.
