Lawrence G. Schwarz has 30 years’ experience as a professional firefighter with the Colorado Springs Fire Department. In 1992 he was promoted to Fire Investigator assigned to the Colorado Springs Police Department’s Major Crimes Division. As an investigator he conducted hundreds of fire scene investigations leading to an arrest and conviction in many high profile cases. Investigator Schwarz testified as an expert witness in numerous cases to include a serial arson, arson for profit and a homicide/arson case leading to a conviction in each case.
From 1999-2004 Schwarz owned and operated Smoke Shadow Investigations, LLC, where he provided origin and cause, investigative work, and courtroom testimony for the insurance industry. The business provided him with valuable experience in the private sector of fire investigations. In 2004 Schwarz made the decision to suspend Smoke Shadow Investigation to pursue his Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Management and Leadership.
In 2008 he was promoted to Battalion Chief assigned to supervise the operations of the busiest district in the City. His responsibilities were the management of day to day operations of 6 Fire Stations and crews, CSFD Heavy Rescue team, Colorado Springs Airport Rescue Operations, CSFD Hazardous Material Team and two medical squads. Schwarz responded and established the incident command system to lead and direct emergency operations at fire, multi-vehicle accidents, hazmat and wildland incidents. As a Battalion Chief he continued to conduct fire scene investigations for the City of Colorado Springs and provide training to the City’s fire investigators and fire officers in the specialized area of fire investigations. He has been certified as an expert witness in structure fire origin and cause determination, in District, State and Federal courts.
