Hurricane Melissa — now a Category 5 storm — is closing in on Jamaica, where it’s expected to make landfall late Monday or early Tuesday as the country’s strongest storm ever recorded.

Melissa will likely have a catastrophic impact, bringing up to 40 inches of rain, storm surge of up to 13 feet, sustained, hurricane-force winds, life-threatening flash flooding and numerous landslides, according to the National Hurricane Center. The hurricane’s slow pace — just 3 mph – means these dangerous conditions will linger, increasing the risk for extensive infrastructure damage and community isolation.

Melissa’s impact will extend across the Caribbean, with severe weather expected to reach Haiti, the Dominican Republic, eastern Cuba and the southeastern Bahamas later in the week.
