As far back as 2013, mental health claims were the fourth-leading generator of short-term disability within the Sedgwick book of business, behind only pregnancy, musculoskeletal and fractures/sprains. Current trends now show mental health catching up with musculoskeletal as the top non-pregnancy diagnostic group, and the gap is tightening As of November 2023, mental health claims account for 12.6% of new short-term disability claims in Sedgwick’s book of business, up from 7% in 2013.
