On Friday, 27 January 2023, Auckland, New Zealand, declared a state of emergency after record-breaking rain caused flash flooding and widespread damage throughout the Auckland, Coromandel and Bay of Plenty regions.
A state of emergency was also declared in Northland on 31 January as the region braces for more rainfall.
An estimated 249 mm (9.8 inches) fell in Auckland Friday, making it the city’s wettest day on record. The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) reported that an entire summer’s rain fell within one day. At least 5,000 homes and businesses have been assessed for flood and landslide damage, with that number expected to rise.
