Just days after making a Category 4 landfall in Louisiana, the remnants of Hurricane Ida ripped through the mid-Atlantic states into the Northeast — causing flooding rains and damaging tornados.

The National Weather Service issued at least five flash flood emergencies Wednesday evening, stretching from west of Philadelphia through northern New Jersey.

Homes were flooded, cars were submerged and water rescues were ongoing in New York, New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania and Maryland. New York declared a state of emergency early this morning with Manhattan subways shut down and many roadways underwater. A state of emergency was also declared in all of New Jersey’s 21 counties.

Tornados destroyed homes and buildings in New Jersey and Annapolis, Maryland. Flash flooding washed away several homes and trailers in western Virginia. And, thousands of people had to evacuate after water reached dangerous levels at a dam near Johnstown, Pennsylvania.

More flooding is possible across southern New England before Ida moves off the coast.
