The strongest storm of the year so far, Typhoon Champi, has intensified into an exceptionally powerful, ‘large and violent’ system heading towards Taiwan.

Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration has issued a sea and land warning, and local governments announced work and school closures on Friday (23 Oct.) as the typhoon approaches, bringing strong winds of nearly 185mph and heavy rain. Airlines have also cancelled nearly 125 flights, and ferry services are impacted too.

Described as a ‘super typhoon’, Champi is the equivalent of a category five hurricane and brings the risk of severe damage to property and flooding. Local people have been urged to avoid mountainous and coastal areas.

After passing over Taiwan, Champi is currently expected to move north towards China, then later Japan’s southern islands.
