A 5.9 magnitude earthquake hit near Mansfield in the State of Victoria on Wednesday, Sept. 22 at 9:15 a.m.
The earthquake is the largest Victoria has ever experienced. It affected the whole state, including the major city of Melbourne. Following the quake, three aftershocks were reported and more are expected. At this time, no serious injuries have been reported.
As of Wednesday afternoon, around 35,000 homes lost power. The majority of damage has impacted wall and floor coverings, windows and signage. In Melbourne, there were reports of structural damage to older buildings. The Melbourne suburbs hit by building damage include Kensington, Ascot Vale, Parkdale, Prahran, Balwyn, Elsternwick, Northcote and West Melbourne.
We’re here to support you
We have an unrivaled Australian CAT response team, including Leon Briggs who led our Christchurch major loss earthquake response. He’s supported by our broader team of civil engineers, building consultants, home and commercial loss adjusters and customer care officers. Whilst we have a large team already based in Victoria, we also have remote inspection capabilities if travel is impossible due to COVID-19, security concerns or the level of damage.
Given our extensive earthquake experience from other countries, we have specific tools and training developed for such unique losses, all of which is now available to us here in Australia. If you have questions or need assistance, please contact our major event response manager shown below.
