Typhoon Noru — the season’s strongest typhoon yet — battered the Philippines’ most populous island with heavy rain and fierce winds.

The storm hit as a super typhoon with sustained winds of 185 kmh. It toppled trees, knocked out power, flooded low-lying communities and destroyed homes across Luzon on Sunday and Monday. Nearly 75,000 people were evacuated from their homes before Noru hit.

The storm weakened after passing through the Philippines on Sunday night and was headed out over the South China Sea towards Vietnam. Philippines is regularly ravaged by storms, with scientists warning they are becoming more powerful as the world gets warmer because of climate change.
