During an unscheduled inspection by the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) to a chemical ISO tank cleaning facility, it was discovered there were traces of chemical spills and washing effluent found outside of the containment pit and subsequent containment area. This promoted the EPA to issue a Clean-up Notice.

The claim involved the insurer appointing environmental consultants to conduct a sampling program to meet the requirement of the Clean-up Notice. The investigation revealed that the site had limited containment measures, causing spillages to migrate into the main sluice valve pit and contaminate the stormwater discharge pipes. The environmental assessment and subsequent report indicated that hydrocarbons were present in the water and sediment in the sluice valve pit and the site’s discharge pipe. It was also discovered that the neighbouring site’s discharge pipe also contributed to the downstream water quality.

We were requested to assist with the incident investigation, pollution assessment and Clean-up Notice. Specifically, our involvement included appointing the environmental consultant to conduct the site assessment, sampling and reporting, and coordinate the vacuuming and washing of the stormwater discharge pipe, ensuring all service providers’ invoices were processed through our system. We also provided claims management and facilitation services, which helped streamline the process and ensure compliance with the Clean-up Notice requirements.

The works included:

  • Conducting an environmental site assessment and sampling exercise
  • Providing a detailed report with recommendations
  • Vacuuming sludge from the sluice valve pit and stormwater discharge pipe
  • High-pressure washing of the sluice valve pit and stormwater discharge pipe
  • Disposing of sludge and silt at an accredited treatment facility for the waste stream

Sedgwick’s efficient on-site management and strategic planning with service providers led to significant cost savings. Our coordinated planning, along with strict adherence to the EPA’s guidelines, ensured efficient remediation, avoiding potential extra costs from regulatory fines or extended closures.

Our team effectively managed the claim and facilitated the necessary actions to comply with the Clean-up Notice. Our expertise and coordination efforts were instrumental in addressing the environmental impact, meeting regulatory requirements and managing the overall claim process efficiently.
