LONDON, 2 May 2024 – Sedgwick, a leading global provider of claims management, loss adjusting and technology-enabled business solutions, today announced that Alex Nicoll has been appointed Head of its Media and Entertainment claims division in the UK.

Nicoll, a specialist media underwriter and trained barrister, was previously a Hollywood producer/director and has vast on-set TV and film experience. He has worked as a media insurance broker and in claims management, where key cases he has overseen have included injury claims to multiple A-list cast members and complex time-element claims caused by production delays on major international TV series and feature films.

Based on his industry expertise, Nicoll was previously appointed to the UK Government’s Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport to manage its post-pandemic Film and TV Production Restart Scheme. He and another member of Sedgwick’s media and entertainment team comprised two of the five-member panel recruited by the UK Government to oversee the groundbreaking £500m COVID-19 interruption scheme.

“We’ve seen a whole host of changes in the media and entertainment industry over the past few years, and it remains in an unprecedented state of flux,” Nicoll said. “Together with new technology and emerging risks, there’s a distinct change of focus, and it’s vital we stay ahead of the curve and adapt to meet future service requirements.

“The media and entertainment industry is more idiosyncratic than most, and in risk management and insurance claims handling, understanding the commercial levers and drivers is crucial,” Nicoll added. “When you speak the same language and pre-empt the pressure points, you immediately remove potential pain from the claim.”

Joseph Noel, Sedgwick’s Managing Director, Commercial Claims Services, said, “With seamless access to Sedgwick’s global expertise in specialisms such as environmental, cyber, liability and marine, and with the support of a full in-house legal team, we uniquely have the breadth and depth to move and react in real time, anywhere in the world. This, combined with Alex’s distinctive background and formidable experience, gives us a definite edge in the volatile media and entertainment market.”

Nicoll is supported by a team of five claims handlers with specialised expertise in film and TV production, sports, e-sports, motorsport, production accounting, festivals and live events, advertising and theatre.
