Back-to-back earthquakes devastate northern Venezuela

Two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela within just seconds of each other on Wednesday, causing widespread destruction across the country’s northern states and capital, Caracas. 

The back-to-back earthquakes measured magnitudes 7.1 and 7.5, and are among the strongest to hit the country in more than a century. Buildings have been flattened, roads have collapsed and critical infrastructure has been severely disrupted. 

Authorities report that at least 164 lives have been lost, with hundreds still missing. Aftershocks pose an ongoing risk to residents and first responders as they continue search efforts and grapple with the aftermath of the disaster.
