Gulf Coast braces for Bertha after severe storms strike the Northeast

Tropical Storm Bertha is tracking westward across the Gulf of Mexico today, bringing heavy rain and damaging winds to millions of people along the Northern Gulf coast. 

Bertha is expected to make landfall in Louisiana this afternoon and move west before dissipating in Texas later this week. Rainfall totals of 1-4 inches could trigger flash flooding in urban areas, while storm surges of up to 4 feet could flood the Louisiana and Mississippi coastlines.

The storm follows a major severe weather outbreak across the Northeast yesterday, where thunderstorms, tornadoes and flash flooding caused widespread damage from Pennsylvania through southern New England.
