The National Hurricane Center is keeping an eye on looming tropical storm threats in the Pacific Ocean — including Hurricane Gilma and a tropical depression — that could cause trouble for Hawaii. The tropical disturbance is developing about 1,000 miles east of Hawaii and is forecasted to earn the name Tropical Storm Hone. It has the potential to bring heavy rains, coastal flooding and strong winds to Hawaii’s Big Island as early as this weekend. In addition, Hurricane Gilma could affect parts of Hawaii next week as it continues its path across the central Pacific.

Any winds brought on by this tropical activity could increase the risk of wildfires in parts of the state that are experiencing extreme drought conditions, such as the Big Island and Maui.
