Winter Storm Elliott will likely intensify into a bomb cyclone as it tracks east through the Plains, Midwest and Great Lakes — bringing snow and strong winds that will be followed by brutally cold temperatures and wind chills into the weekend.

The storm has already caused major travel disruptions on the air and ground, and has knocked out power to thousands of homes and businesses. Blizzard warnings have been issued for parts of the Northern Plains, Upper Midwest and Great Lakes. The heaviest snow will target the Great Lakes, with over a foot possible in some areas. High winds capable of tree damage and more power outages could blast much of the Midwest and East.
