A tropical system in the Atlantic is expected to strengthen into Hurricane Imelda and could hit the Carolinas early next week. The system will move through the Bahamas this weekend before heading north toward the Southeast coast. It has a 90% chance of developing into a tropical storm over the next 48 hours, according to the National Hurricane Center.
What to expect:
- Heavy rain and strong winds from South Carolina to Virginia
- Storm surge and coastal flooding
- Inland flooding concerns, even if the system doesn’t make landfall
Meanwhile, Hurricane Humberto continues to intensify in the Central Atlantic, to the east of the developing system. While it may pose a threat to Bermuda, Humberto is not expected to make landfall or impact the U.S. directly.
