Hawaii begins recovery efforts after Hurricane Lala

Hurricane Lala brought torrential rain, damaging winds and dangerous surf to Hawaii over the weekend, causing widespread flooding, power outages and property damage across the islands. The storm passed just 30 miles south of Ka Lae and impacted communities throughout the state. 

Parts of the Big Island received 15-30 inches of rain, while strong winds and large waves damaged homes, downed trees and left more than 150,000 utility customers without power. Officials reported at least 100 homes were damaged or washed away.

Flooding, mudslides and debris flows continue to pose risks to residents. Emergency crews are responding and restoring critical infrastructure, but damaged roads and downed trees may slow recovery efforts in some areas.
