The new year brought more severe weather, including the devastating wildfires in Boulder County, Colorado, and the winter storms that rolled through multiple states.
Last week, the fast-moving, wind-driven wildfires burned more than 6,000 acres in the Boulder County area, north of Denver, forcing tens of thousands to evacuate. According to officials, roughly 1,000 properties have been destroyed, and it’s likely to become the most costly wildfire in Colorado history.
A winter storm then rolled through the Midwest on Sunday, impacting at least 18 states. Farther south, severe storms damaged homes, knocked out power, and downed trees in parts of Kentucky and Alabama. The first significant snowstorm of the season hit the East Coast nearly shutting down several cities, snarling traffic, and leaving about 1 million without power on Monday.
Meteorologists continue to monitor the potential for yet another winter storm that is expected to take shape and aim at areas from the Midwest to the Northeast late this week.
