Hurricane Debby made landfall in Florida’s panhandle Monday, bringing severe flooding, dangerous sustained winds and heavy rains to much of the area. As of Monday morning, over 300,000 customers are without power as the storm begins its slow but powerful stroll across the state, bringing catastrophic rains and record storm surge. Some parts of the state are expected to see 18 inches of rain and 6-10 feet of storm surge over the coming days.
The storm is expected to continue north before stalling in Georgia and South Carolina, bringing dangerous storm surge, flooding and high winds to much of the southeast coast. Hurricane Debby began as a tropical wave near Cuba late last week, rapidly developing from a tropical storm to a Category 1 hurricane over the weekend due in part to warm water temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico.
