The deadliest earthquake in Morocco for more than six decades has severely impacted lives and property.

The United Nations estimates 300,000 people across the region have been affected, and our thoughts are with the victims and their families.

Many people are continuing to sleep outside due to fear of aftershocks.

The epicentre was in the mountainous Al Haouz region in the High Atlas Mountains. However, it was powerful enough to also affect parts of Marrakech and communities south of the major city.

In many rural communities, buildings were constructed with a traditional mix of stone, timber and mortar made from mud, and collapsed completely.

Several Unesco World Heritage sites are also thought to have been damaged including the Timnel mosque.
