Diversity, equity and inclusion

Sedgwick has a long-standing commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).

Our work continues in 2023 as we integrate DEI into everything we do – from our hiring practices to our professional development initiatives and colleague engagement efforts. We’re so proud to have received numerous DEI-related awards, but the best recognition of all is what we hear directly from our colleagues on their positive experience working here.

Hiring practices

We highlight our commitment to DEI throughout our careers website and in all aspects of recruitment. In 2023, we began providing training and interview guides to colleagues who participate in interviews to help them assess the qualifications of our qualified, diverse applicants, as well as all other job candidates. Most of our positions are remote, which helps us expand our reach to be more inclusive.

To further engage additional diverse candidates, we’ve worked with the following diverse sourcing channels in a variety of ways, including posting open roles, participating in job fairs and providing scholarships:

  • CareerSpring: Student empowerment and job-placement network focused on first-generation and/or low-income college students (FGLI).
  • DirectEmployers Association: Talent aggregator that shares our open roles with 1000+ global job boards.
  • Gamma Iota Sigma: Student and alumni professional fraternity with over 100 chapters nationwide that supplies and develops the risk management and insurance industry’s talent pipeline.
  • Military Spouse Employment Association: Creates employment connections that provide companies with direct access to military spouses.
  • National African American Insurance Association (NAAIA): Network for people of color and others employed in or affiliated with the insurance industry.
  • ROMBA: This conference is the world’s largest gathering of LGBTQ+ business students and alumni.
  • Spencer: Funds scholarships and grants for the future’s risk management and insurance leaders.
  • University of Memphis (UofM) School of Business: Sedgwick awards scholarships and internships to this diverse student body and taps into the UofM alumni network for help with recruiting, particularly nurses.

Professional development

We offer learning courses that educate colleagues on our commitment to DEI, our focus on allyship in the workplace and ways to manage bias. In 2023, 99% of colleagues completed the DEI training where offered. We also provide additional learning opportunities through Sedgwick University, our in-house training and development offering. Starting on their very first day at Sedgwick, all colleagues have access to thousands of online courses, tuition reimbursement, leadership training and more.

In addition, we incorporate DEI into what we call our CARING behavioral model, which we introduced in 2023. This model provides guidance on behaviors colleagues should display in accordance with our core values, including “I” – for inclusion. These behaviors are part of our everyday life at Sedgwick and are baked into talent management conversations.

Engagement through colleague resource groups (CRGs)

In 2022, we introduced colleague resources groups (CRGs), which are global colleague-led business groups that raise awareness for DEI, foster engagement and build a sense of belonging. In 2023, we continued adding more groups and now offer CRGs for women, LGBTQ+, Black colleagues, early career, Hispanic and Latinx colleagues, and military and veterans. In total, our CRGs have more than 5,000 members, who benefit from offerings around professional development, business engagement, community outreach and member engagement.

In 2023, both our Women’s CRG and Early Career CRG offered mentoring that matched mentees with mentors across the organization. Nearly 340 colleagues participated in mentoring in 2023 via the CRG program.

As another example of CRG initiatives, the members of our LGBTQ+ CRG, participated in Pride events in Memphis, Tennessee, and Columbus, Ohio, in 2023 and ran a Pride Month giving campaign to raise funds for LGBTQ+ organizations.

Colleagues self-ID diversity information

In 2023, we asked our U.S. colleagues to voluntarily and confidentially share diversity information so that we can tailor things like our benefits offering to our colleagues. The better we understand our colleagues, the better we can create a work environment that delivers the programs, policies and resources our colleagues need. In 2023, as part of meeting our colleagues’ needs, we launched a gender transition guide to support colleagues who are or will be transitioning their gender while working at Sedgwick.
