Large-scale, major losses are by their very nature intricate, complex and full of challenges. Sedgwick is well-versed in taking care of our clients and consumers in the face of the world’s largest and most complex losses.
Our specialist groups have expertise in major and complex loss management in several fields, including:
- Construction and engineering
- Cyber and technology

- Financial and special risks
- Fine art and specie
- Personal lines
- Power and utilities
- Real estate
Sedgwick has always had a strong culture of hands-on learning — so our teams always have access to someone who’s been there and seen it before. Ongoing professional development through formal training programs and mentoring ensures knowledge sharing between colleagues.
Getting you back to business
Our major and complex loss team includes engineers, lawyers, accountants, surveyors and economists who have managed claims in every sector from schools to seaports and from mines to marinas.
From this team of experts, you can expect:
- Deep sector expertise. Whatever the specialty and whatever the type of loss, our approach is the same and our expertise is unmatched — across industries and around the world.
- Globally consistent service. We know that consistent client service inspires confidence. Our clients know — and trust — the service that our solutions deliver.
- Tech-forward and compliant solutions. We use technology to enhance our delivery, like drones for inaccessible losses or AI to streamline the process.
- Data security. Because protecting your data is a top priority, we use a range of tools including Carbon Black and Darktrace.
Key industry focus
Construction and engineering
We are recognised for our expertise in buildings, civil engineering and mechanical and electrical engineering projects. This allows us to provide a high level of technical competence in contractors all risks, engineering all risks, delay in start- up and completed civil works claims, as well as construction liability and stand-alone machinery breakdown claims.
Cyber and technology
In a changing and increasingly exposed industry, cyber claims require an adapted and modular solution. We offer services to clients, brokers and insurance companies including risk verification, cyber security monitoring and management, loss adjusting and forensic IT, and incident remediation.
Energy and renewable energy
We’re one of the leading adjusters in this field and our experts have extensive experience in handling major losses at pipelines, oil refineries and a variety of upstream and downstream process facilities. We are also skilled in working on renewable energy claims including hydro, wind and solar.
We offer a network of environmental specialists who understand the local legislation. Environmental impairment losses can have an impact on soil, groundwater, air, rivers, protected habits and, of course, fauna and flora living in and on it, including people. The remediation of environmental pollution tends to be complex and expensive, requiring highly skilled environmental adjusters who understand these intricate issues.
Jewellry, fine art and specie
Jewellers block, specie and fine art losses often involve examination of evidence in the absence of any tangible damage. This requires the experience of knowing what questions to ask, what documentation to request and the right instincts to ‘follow the trail’. We use the experience of loss adjusters with in-depth industry experience to offer a comprehensive claims management solution. We work closely with insurers, reinsurers, brokers and cedants around the world, drawing on our network of professional staff. We are also able to utilise the expertise of a network of independent specialist restorers, valuers and forensic investigators.
Financial and special risks
We provide specialised loss adjusting and risk management expertise across a wide spectrum of financial, BBB, commercial crime, jewellers’ block, fine arts, product recall and political risks.
We are highly specialised in responding, nationally and internationally, to the different liability and property claims for this sector. We understand the needs of the clients as well as the operational and regulatory framework of this type of business.
We have expertise in handling all types of mining-related claims, both first party property or third-party liability, soft rock and hard rock, underground and open-pit, as well as surface processing facilities and waste and tailings systems – from fire, machinery breakdown and natural catastrophe perils.
We understand that high profile mining claims bring inherent risks of adverse publicity and damage to reputation. We help to restrict the time and cost of dealing with these issues.
The early identification of issues of fact, coverage and procedure is paramount to make sure of the correct tactical development of the claim from notification to conclusion. In this way we can control costs and make sure all parties to the loss are informed of developments.
Power and utilities
We have recognised power and utilities specialists, including engineers of all types. We regularly handle large losses involving combined-cycle, gas, steam, and nuclear, as well as telecoms companies, water, waste-water and similar utilities.
Our longstanding expertise enables us to validate and finalise claims swiftly, satisfying the needs of property owners, managing agents and tenants alike. We can respond promptly and professionally to all types of real estate claims for all property types. Through regular communication with all stakeholders, we identify and resolve all critical issues and will have the claim resolved as soon as possible.
We help businesses prepare for the unexpected and evaluate their insurance cover.
