Case Study: Risk Services

Managing workplace violence risk in a challenging healthcare environment

Challenge

A large, state-run healthcare campus with residential facilities for the mentally disabled saw an increase in incidents of workplace violence. Local media portrayed the agency as providing unsafe working conditions. The agency sought to enhance safety practices to restore its reputation and protect employees from harm.

Solution

The agency partnered with Sedgwick’s risk services experts on consistent strategies to reduce the risks associated with caregiver/resident interactions. They implemented violence prevention tactics that included installing cameras in every facility, regular employee training on conflict management and de-escalation, in-depth and constructive reviews of all violent incidents, and assigning high-risk residents to familiar and trusted caregivers.

Results

Sedgwick’s efforts to help the agency understand how employees were getting hurt on the job, devise plans to reduce risks, and consistently implement training solutions paid off substantially. The safety programs have yielded very favorable results, significantly reducing the incidence of violence and related injuries and losses.

Our risk services proactively address safety hazards and are tailored to the conditions and culture of each workplace.
