Marine + transportation
The marine and transportation industries are central to the economy — and our daily lives.
What we do
Sedgwick maintains one of the largest and most experienced marine claims operations in the industry. Our global network means we have specialists with the in-depth technical expertise to support any claim, anywhere in the world.
With more than 200 dedicated marine experts worldwide, we’re well-equipped to handle global supply chains, ever-changing marine regulations, environmental policies and diminished salvage resources. Through our global network of specialists with in-depth technical expertise, we can quickly assemble the right people in the right place to support any claim. And with our global marine app, clients have quick access to our experts worldwide.
In the UK, our marine team offers comprehensive loss adjusting and third party administration (TPA) services to insurers, P&I Clubs, brokers and multinational companies – 24/7 end-to-end, marine claims handling support.
A loss could occur at any time, anywhere in the world, so our global network of specialists, available 24/7, is well-placed to handle any marine claim that occurs.
Our specialist handlers manage all aspects of cargo movement claims – road, rail, air and sea – as well as warehoused goods. We provide a claims handling service from first notification of loss followed by a thorough assessment of the peril and appointment of suitably qualified marine surveyors, if appropriate, through to settlement and pursuit of third party recoveries.
When things go wrong, establishing who is responsible and how such liability by either be restricted or indeed defended takes expert knowledge of freight operations, contract terms and international conventions. Our team of freight liability experts will lead our principals through the entire process.
More and more companies do not operate their own storage facility; they rely on the provision of warehouse services from third party providers. From simple storage operations through to full Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) and inventory control with pick and pack services, we are market leaders in the investigation of multicustomer/multicontract warehouse keepers claims.
When large, high value project-critical equipment is transported across the globe, the risks are just as large and equally as critical — involving complex components, intricate transport logistics and tight timeframes.
Project cargo insurance generally covers the entire shipping process – from the time the goods or materials leave the manufacturer to their arrival at the project site. We undertake project cargo/heavy lift and warranty surveys to prevent losses and claims occurring, including preventing the delayed start-up date of the project (DSU). We provide risk management advice on loading, discharging, securing and movement of project-critical cargoes.
There has been significant growth in the use of pleasure craft around the world, with increased numbers of vessels owned and operated in established and emerging markets.
Owners and insurers of pleasure craft want their vessels to be back in use quickly following an incident. We provide a complete pleasure craft service, working closely with all parties to get a speedy resolution to claims. We tailor services to each client, including:
- 24/7 global claims reporting and management
- Claims adjusting and consultancy
- Claims handling and support services
- Casualty management
- Hull and machinery surveys
- Fraud investigations
We service circa 2,000 claims annually, for clients including Lloyd’s syndicates and leading yacht risk insurers in the London market.
We regularly investigate and adjust liability claims across the full range of risks insured in the marine market. Our cargo and logistics expertise brings benefits both in terms of more effective loss mitigation, as well as careful investigation of the cause of loss and the responsibility for it. Our clients include P&I clubs and fixed-premium insurers of freight-forwarders, truck-operators, warehouse-keepers, ports and terminals and marine trade businesses such as welders, fabricators, and repairers.
Every day, thousands of people turn to Sedgwick when faced with a life-changing moment. They work for global brands that want to provide the best coverage for the people they value most. They are big and small business owners who need to get things back on track. And they are employees and consumers who need to know that they’re protected. We take care of them when they need it most, helping them get back on their feet, back on the road, back to business as usual — because caring counts.
